2016年5月10日， 在小米发布会上，小米MIUI 8首先亮相，将在5月16日开放论坛邀请内测，6月1日开放公测，6月17日发布开发版。而在MIUI 8中，小米还推出“小米兰亭”字体，经过18个月精心打磨，从中宫调整，到重心设计，全部根据移动互联网的展示和阅读特性做了细致的设计。与方正合作，“小米兰亭”字体从6763个常用汉字、标点符号、拉丁字母，扩展到27533个汉字的全字库，号称要重新定义了小米手机的中文移动阅读体验。
